Elba Island
Considered the pearl of the Tuscan Archipelago, Elba Island is the third largest Italian island, after Sicily and Sardinia. Elba has always been a source of natural resources: for the Etruscans it was an inexhaustible source of wealth for its iron that contributed to the prosperity of their civilization. The Romans appreciated the healing mud of the island: the remains of two rich Patrizie villas have been found, one of which right near the thermal basin.
During the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Cosimo de’ Medici built his “Cosmopoli” (today Portoferraio) encircling it with mighty walls, the famous “Medici Fortress” that saved the inhabitants from pirate raids. The historical period that made this island famous, however, projecting it on the world stage, was that of the short exile of Napoleon Bonaparte (1814-15), which left a significant mark in this tiny kingdom, handing down two magnificent residences: Villa dei Mulini and the Villa of San Martino.
The happy geographical location and the mild climate allow visitors to spend pleasant stays even in low season, in the name of wellness and relaxation immersed in a small natural paradise.
